  John Tilbury, John Edwards and Mark Sanders, Cafe Oto 17 June 2013.
This was the first time that John Tilbury, John Edwards and Mark Sanders had played together and it will probably be the last. This was a disappointingly uncommunicative performance. The bassist and percussionist seemed to have little patience with what pianist Tilbury had to say. Several times they left a small space for him to develop a theme alone for a moment - fugitive chords, a skittering, atonal melody - before thudding in over the top and drowning his strange, intriguing modernist shapes with waves of increasingly bad tempered thumping and chiming.

  Obviously John Edwards and Mark Sanders are extremely accomplished musicians, and I have seen Mr Edwards perform amazingly in some amazing concerts. But this seemed to be either a bad night for them or perhaps just an ill conceived idea for an ensemble. I had hoped for a more democratic, sensitive group improvisation from three big names in the genre.
